Kampala — NINE people have been arrested for destroying the environment in Kakindo sub-county, Kibaale district. According to Daniel Businge, the district environment officer, the suspects were found carrying out agriculture in the wetlands contrary to the National Environment Act.
“These people had opened up gardens in the wetland and were preparing for the planting season, claiming that the wetland belongs to them. this is unacceptable,” Businge said.
The suspects were identified by locals as Sliver Turyagyenda, Bernard Mubangyizi, Damian Kakuru, Kalole Nkuna, Damasan Kalekyezi, Kyakwera Kyampaye, Gloria, Korugyendo, Florence Bagenda and Silagi Semugoma
Some of them were taken to Kibaale Police Station, while others were left at Igayaza Police Post in Kakindo sub-county.
Businge said the suspects would serve as an example to the public because some people did not respect the law on the environment.
The Kibaale criminal investigations chief, Michael Ogwal, said the suspects will face court as soon as investigations were completed.
